Nazanin Abedini (a PhD student of Svetlana Dubinkina at the VU Mathematics department) obtained a fellowship from the Collaborative Research Centre SFB1294 “Data Assimilation - The Seamless Integration of Data and Models” in Potsdam, Germany, for an extensive research visit. For the past three months Nazanin conducted research in collaboration with the scientific groups of Prof. Jana de Wiljes at University of Potsdam and Technical University of Ilmenau in Germany.

The topic of the joint collaboration is the improvement of model predictions when only a scarce dataset is available: collecting data always comes with a cost and we might not be able to have measurements of the whole field. For instance, when sending a ship to record ocean measurements, one collects data only at selected times and locations.

During the visit Nazanin made a breakthrough in guaranteeing tight bounds on error prediction by smartly using limited data.
